川はどうして わらっているの

「川はどうして わらっているの」は川の街・東京に飛び込む、5週間にわたる社会参加型アートのプログラムです。リバーウォーク、ストリートアクション、ワークショップ、パフォーマンス、展覧会、シンポジウムを通して、地域の川や運河の意義を探求していきます。神田川沿いの歴史的な高架橋をリノベーションした会場にはビデオアート、マッピングスタディ、彫刻インスタレーションが展示され、その場はチームが日々制作活動を展開するためのオープン・スタジオになります。また、イベントや外堀周辺での活動も、この会場を拠点として行われます。

SOCIAL DIVE: Artist-in-Residence Projects

「ソーシャルダイブ」は、東京のまちのさまざまなエリアに海外アーティストが飛び込み、そこで集い暮らす人びとが持つ魅力を見つめ、新しい価値を生み出すことを目的としたアートプロジェクトです。参加アーティストは社会と交わりながら、まちに潜むあらゆるつながりを明らかにしていきます。それはいま、日本に住み暮らす私たちにとっては思いがけない、もしくは身近すぎて気づけなかった視点かもしれません。

前回の東京ビエンナーレ2020/2021における公募プログラム「SOCIAL DIVE: Artist-in-Residence Projects」では、1,535組あまりの応募から海外アーティスト12組が選ばれましたが、新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響を受け、このうち7組のアーティストのプロジェクトが実施延期となりました。東京ビエンナーレ2023では、来日が叶わなかったこれらのアーティストを改めて招聘し、作品を発表します。

Why is the River Laughing

“Why is the River Laughing” is an immersion into the river city of Tokyo. The project is a 5-week program of socially engaged art that explores the significance of local rivers and canals through river walks, street actions, workshops, performances, an exhibition, and a symposium. The venue is a renovated historic viaduct on the Kanda River. The gallery features video art, mapping studies, and sculptural installations. It is an open studio for the team to develop the project as a process. It is also a venue for events and a headquarters for activities around the Sotobori outer moat system.

Supported by The School of Global Studies at Thammasat University, The Center for Philosophical Technologies at Arizona State University, The University of Tasmania, and The University of New South Wales.

SOCIAL DIVE: Artist-in-Residence Projects

For the SOCIAL DIVE Artist in Residence Projects, an open call program that was held in the previous Tokyo Biennale 2020/2021, twelve overseas artists were selected from over 1,535 applications. However, the projects of seven of those artists were postponed due to the effects of the coronavirus.

For Tokyo Biennale 2023, we plan to invite the artists who were unable to come to Japan to present their works. The artists will “dive” into various areas of the Tokyo cityscape, observe the charm of people who live and gather there, and generate new values. While interacting with society, the artists will come to reveal various connections latent in the city. These connections may offer unexpected perspectives for those who live and work in Japan today, or viewpoints that are all too familiar for its inhabitants to notice.

■作家プロフィール

マイケル・ホンブロウ

ニュージーランド生まれ、バンコク在住の学際的アーティスト。現在はバンコクの「Buffalo Field」フェスティバルの芸術監督を務める。ホーンブロウの活動は建築からダンス、パブリックアートに至るまで多岐にわたり、特にエコロジカルで具体的な手法で社会に貢献している。彼の関心は社会実践が異文化やコミュニティに与える影響に集中している。タスマニア大学で非常勤講師を務め、ロイヤルメルボルン工科大学で建築の博士号を取得。その後、コンコルディア大学でポスト博士研究を行った。国際的なフェスティバルやシンポジウムで作品を展示する一方、アジアでの長い創作活動歴があり、日本でのダンス・トレーニングやインドネシアでのレジデンス活動などの実績を持つ。

Michael Hornblow

Michael Hornblow is a New Zealand-born, Bangkok-based multidisciplinary artist, serving as the Artistic Director for Buffalo Field, a community-centric festival in Bangkok’s old town, Nang Loeng. With a diverse background spanning architecture, design, public art, and dance, Michael is keenly interested in the intersection of social practice, cross-cultural collaboration, and community development. He employs embodied and ecological methods in his work. Michael is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Tasmania and a former Post-Doctoral Fellow at Concordia University. His art has been showcased at international venues like the Melbourne Festival and the International Symposium on Electronic Art. He has a long-standing creative involvement in Asia, including dance training in Japan and artistic residencies in Indonesia.
